River Cottage
River Cottage
Located on the banks of the River Dee, in Chester’s oldest street, River Cottage is a beautifully restored fisherman’s cottage which was formerly part of the Duke of Westminster’s estate.
This cobbled street is the traditional home of Chester’s fishing community. Once known as “Sty” or Style” Lane, its current name is thought to be after Joseph Greenway who rented the salmon cage, a traditional piece of fishing equipment in the 1840’s. This part of the river, below the weir, was a very important local fishery until the early part of the 20th century.
